Railway Cottage
A compact house located within a terrace of Victorian railway cottages is to become a minimalist, Scandinavian inspired home for a young family.
The house is to be completely refurbished and extended at the rear to provide a new kitchen with a garden studio located at the back of the newly landscaped garden.
The modest proportions of the existing footprint are opened up by a modern interpretation of the galley-style kitchen. The kitchen is then sunken to increase head height and create a sense of being enveloped by the garden.
A new concealed utility and pantry optimise the dead space in the centre of the plan allowing for a clean, minimal kitchen space.
The extension is to be wrapped in recycled woodfibre insulation and charred cedar cladding to provide acoustic and thermal isolation. Responding to the slim, angled plot, a low level sliding window focuses the view to the immediate gravel garden outside and perennial meadow beyond.
Currently on site, due to complete in autumn 2024.
